Chapter Six

“Remember me sayin’ I saw somethin’ in the road when Miss Ellie broke down?” Ray asked as Chace followed him away from Ellie.

Chace nodded. “You figured it was her alternator belt.”

Ray reached around and pulled a piece of black rubber out of his back pocket. “Sure was. I walked back to get it while the tow truck fella hooked up her rig. It was kinda tricky, what with the trailer and all.”

Chace stared at the belt Ray handed him. “It’s been cut.”

“Yep. Looked to me like somebody cut it enough so she wouldn’t get too far down the road before it tore the rest of the way.”

Looking in the direction of Ellie’s rig, Chace shook his head. “Who would want to do that?”

“Don’t know,” Ray answered. “But I thought you’d wanna know about it. You seem to be real taken with the little lady.”

Chace suspected he knew exactly who might want to slow Ellie down. But he didn’t know why. “Can you do some digging and find out if anybody saw somebody around her truck Sunday night or Monday morning?”

“Sure thing. I’ll let you know soon as I find out anything.”

Chace thanked him and started back to his truck. Should he warn Ellie? But who would he warn her about? J.R.? He didn’t have any proof, and he sure didn’t have any reason why the weasel would do such a thing. But he’d damn sure find out if it was J.R.

At his own truck, he tossed the belt in the back and went to find Ellie. Until he knew more, he wouldn’t say anything. He’d just keep a closer eye on her.

Raised voices hurried him around his truck to the other side of her camper. She wasn’t alone, and he didn’t like the way the cowboy with her was holding on to her.

The look of shock on Ellie’s face caused him to grab the man’s shoulder and jerk him around. “You’d better think twice about what you’re doing,” he growled.

“You’d better mind your own business,” the cowboy snarled in reply and didn’t let go of her.

“I warned you.” Chace pulled back his arm, intending to plant his fist in the cowboy’s face, and was knocked back several steps when Ellie lunged at him.

“No, Chace! He’s my brother.”

Chace pulled his punch and stared at her, still holding a handful of the man’s shirt in his other fist. “Huh?”

She pried his fingers from the shirt. “My brother, you fool.” She glanced at the cowboy when Chace let go of him. “For heaven’s sake, Matt. You’ve got people staring at us.”

Matt ducked his head and looked at another man who resembled Ellie. Realization hit Chace that he’d come close to flattening Ellie’s kin. Not the best way to get in her good graces.

She turned her back on him, and he reached out to stop her. “Look, I’m—”

“Forget it,” she said with a dismissive wave and shook off his hand. “You always seem to show up at the worst times.”

“When you need me most, you mean,” Chace said with a grin.
